EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
